The Empire - Styled Shot for The Wedding Harvest

With Downtown Abbey trending on screens, a British influence has seeped into the wedding sphere for 2015 – think high teas, garden parties and a plethora of vintage decor. Rather than follow the flow of this emerging trend, Peachey Pie added their own spin with a British Colonial styled shoot full of dark timber, tropical foliage, canvas director chairs and delicate china, made even more luxe with hints of tarnished gold. These fine elements were harnessed in the amazing photography by Ivy Road Photography. This is but another installation of what the up-and-coming The Wedding Harvest has to offer.

Wedding Hair + Makeup : with Studio Eleven

Having the perfect hair, skin and makeup for your wedding day is something that every bride dreams about.  However, there is a lot of preparation and planning that needs to be considered before your special day.  We have spoken to one of our very talented Harvest vendors, hair and makeup artist Aleisha from Studio Eleven.  She has some great tips and tricks to help you feel and look beautiful on your wedding day.

Hair Care
We recommend getting a haircut or trim 6 weeks out from your day for your hair to look its best.  If you want the illusion of thick, long, luscious hair, hair extensions or a hairpiece is a great option.  It would be best to talk to your hair stylist and organize this approximately 3 weeks out from the day.  If you are planning on colouring your hair before your wedding day, it is best to do this about 1 week before, so that it has some time to settle and look its best.

Skin Care
Preparing your skin for your wedding day is a very important step that can be looked over by many brides.  Your skincare preparation can determine how your makeup looks and sits on your skin on the day.  These preparations should start about 10 weeks out from your wedding day and continue through to the lead up of your big day.  Facials, microdermabrasion treatments and moisturizing are your number one priorities to ensure your complexion is looking its best.  Using paw paw or lip balm on your lips every day will prepare your lips for that important first kiss!  Completing this step will also ensure that any lipstick or gloss will last a lot longer on your lips.  Another optional step is a natural spray tan; this can give your skin an even complexion and the glow every bride wants on their wedding day.

Make Up
Choosing a make up look to suit your wedding, your dress and your personality is a major step in your preparations.  We highly recommend speaking to a professional and having a make up trial before your day to ensure that you are 100% happy with your look on the day.

WE CHAT WITH SAMANTHA WILLS

In celebration of our Samantha Wills VIP tipi tickets going on sale this week, we took ten with Samantha to ask her some very important questions…..

1.    Who/What inspires your bridal collection?

For the bridal collections, while we have some more traditional pieces in the line, the collections overall are inspired by a non traditional bride – the pieces, I hope, are a reflection of the jewellery she wears everyday, but with a tiny bit more sparkle… I think it’s really important that what you wear on your wedding day is an extension of your personal style.

2.    Why did you see the bridal range as an important expansion for the brand?

It became very important, very quickly! We found that the girls who followed & were invested in our brand all got to a time in their lives where they were getting married or were being a part of weddings and they were asking for customized SW pieces – so it presented itself very organically.

3.    Bohemian, Luxe, Unconventional…what other characteristics, define an SW Bride?

They pretty much sum it up! The SW bride is also very inclusive with her bridal party – usually if the bride is wearing SW, her bridesmaids will be as well – she usually selects SW for her bridesmaids as their gift – which I think is a beautiful gesture.

4.    What looks are currently dominating the bridal scene and how is this reflected in your collection?

Brides are forgoing a traditional veil for a metal based or jewelled headpiece, we are having a lot of interest in this category at the moment. As the FINE trend continues, we are seeing a lot of our brides layering fine, crystal set rings for their special day.

5.    What are some of your favourite wedding movies and have they inspired your designs?

Oh I love a wedding movie! I would say they inspire the collections – but they definitely get me more excited about the category! Some of my all time fav wedding films are: My Best Friend’s Wedding & Father of the Bride.

6.    Fine jewellery is a huge trend at the moment, what are your thoughts on fine jewellery for a bride rather than costume? And what do you prefer?

I love FINE jewellery mixed in with costume. If you are not a big jewellery person, I think FINE adds a perfect amount of glitter – just a sprinkling… I think FINE rings are perfect for a bride – as you want the focus to be on your engagement & wedding band.

7.    If you were getting married tomorrow and had to pick one piece of jewellery to wear, what would it be and why?

I think earrings are the most important. Earrings frame the face & you can wear small ones or statement – whatever suits your style.

8.    Say it's 2010 and you're getting married – what would we have seen you in?

Haha! This is a great question! I don’t think my accessories would have changed that much. My dress probably would have been very lace heavy & a lot more fancy than it would be today.

9.    What are key pieces bridesmaids should look for?

I like statement rings for bridesmaids – it’s a nice addition to compliment the flowers, and as with the bride – definitely earrings.

10. Where is your ideal wedding location? Australia or New York?

I think Australia… it’s home. However my boyfriend is American, so we kind of need somewhere that’s a little bit more central – my ideal would be a cliff top in Big Sur California.

11. Beach honeymoon or European getaway?

Tropical – for sure!!!

Utilizing innovative lighting features is critical to everything we do at AVIdeas - not only to create the right ambience and mood, but also to disguise or highlight architectural features of the venue or environment to seamlessly blend with the overall theme.

When planning any aspect of your wedding, we get to know your venue inside out.

When looking for venues be sure to ask questions like,
-What control do you have of the room lights, are they fluro or warm white.
-Do they dim, can you turn them off, how much time do you have to set up and packup after the evening. - - What is the Loading Dock access like and can we hang anything from the roof, is there any rigging points in the roof.

From here our creative stylist can deliver a range of themes from vintage to classic, bespoke, glam,  to corporate or complete custom themes to suit your needs. We have a large inventory of one-off and unique furniture, lighting effects and props, and if we don’t have the piece you want, we have the contacts and industry connections to source it all or even build it for your big day.

CHOOSING YOUR WEDDING STATIONERY (with Cass from Cass Deller Designs)

Stationery is one element of your wedding that can be truly, one hundred percent individual. We love seeing stationery that is a true reflection of the happy couple - your personalities should shine through the paper. There are so many options available to customise your stationery, with a never ending range of colours, textures, materials and typography... and the list goes on!

We spoke with one of our favourite Harvest vendors Cass from Cass Deller Designs, to gain insight into her top tips for choosing your wedding stationery.

Why is it so important to have a professional stationery designer on board?

If you are looking for something unique for your wedding, its imperative to engage a professional designer to be able to capture the essence of you and your wedding into your gorgeous stationery.

Your stationery is the first glimpse into your wedding from your guests point of view, so its always wonderful to create an amazing first impression and leave your guests with an idea of what to expect….without giving too much away! A professional stationery designer can also take your beautiful design from your invitations right through to all of your wedding day items.

How far in advance should I book my stationery?

Ideally you should book in your stationery design no less than 6 weeks out from when you are wishing to send them out. As a guide, you should send your Save the Date’s 6 months prior to your wedding date, and you should send your Invitations no less than 2 months prior to your wedding date. If you are having a destination wedding, or inviiting guests from overseas, you should give as much notice as possible.

How much of my budget should I set aside for stationery?

This can really depend on how many guests you are having at your wedding, and how elaborate your wedding theme is. Depending on how large your wedding is, and how many items you would like for your stationery, you would be looking between $1500 - $3000 on average.

To make the process a little clearer and easier for couples (you have enough to worry about when planning a wedding) I have just launched a price list and order form function on my website which allows you to view my custom stationery prices, and complete the order form, in which you will receive an obligation free quote. I have also recently added 5 ‘ready-to-go’ stationery sets to my collection (and growing), which again, you can order directly from my website.

What kinds of trends are you seeing at the moment in terms of stationery design?

Hand Calligraphy and watercolour illustrations are extremely popular with me at the moment, which I love. Its so refreshing to see couples requesting bright watercolour blooms, combined with striking gold calligraphy! It really sends a statement to their guests when they receive something so different and beautiful.

I really try to see my designs as a work of art, which I am creating especially for a magical occasion, and which can be carried through to all areas of their wedding. Gold foiling is also a big hit at the moment, and leaves a gorgeous impression on the paper.

What is the most rewarding part of being a stationery designer?

Working with brides and grooms, in the happiest times of their lives. Weddings are such a positive and fun occasion (although sometimes stressful) and I just love designing something that reflects this magical time in their lives. Hearing positive feedback to my designs is another reason why I keep doing what I do.

You can view more stunning work from Cass via her website, or see her in person at The Wedding Harvest! x

CHOOSING YOUR WEDDING FLOWERS (with Nicole from Stem Design)

We have been so inspired lately by the trends we are seeing in terms of floral design. Did you know that being in the presence of flowers has actually been proven to directly contribute to your levels of happiness, energy and enthusiasm?! It has been so refreshing to see floral styling being embraced wholeheartedly by brides who understand the amazing ambience and impact that can be created by gorgeous flowers.

With so much inspiration it can be overwhelming when the time comes to organise your wedding flowers. We spoke to the always lovely Nicole from Stem Design, to get her invaluable insight into the current floral trends, budgeting and planning for your day.

Why is it so important to have a professional floral stylist on board?

N: Flowers can take the styling of any event to the next level. They are the most important 'soft furnishing' you can add to your day.

Almost every bride will carry flowers on her wedding day. Your bouquet will be in more then half of all of your wedding photos, so you want them to be the best representation of your style and personality.

Good quality is not only about the flowers themselves. You want to choose a florist that is also great at working with colour, texture, seasonality and design. That way your flowers will become an integral part of your whole look and the atmosphere for the entire day, from your ceremony through to your reception, will be cohesive.

At what stage of my wedding should I book my florist?

If you are a true lover of all things floral, and flowers will play a big part in your wedding day, it is a good idea to get in as early as possible with your chosen florist.

Like all good wedding vendors, your florist can book out well in advance of your day, so it is best to start a dialogue with them as soon as you can.

It can be helpful to have your venues and gowns chosen first, then we can recommend florals that will work perfectly with your chosen space and dress style/fabric, but this isn't an absolute must.

What kind of costs are involved/ how much of my budget should I set aside for my wedding flowers?

There is no golden rule with costings for weddings, especially with wedding flowers. They may be a priority for some and not for others. We find that our brides tend to work on a 10% ratio when it comes to budgeting for there florals. This is a percentage of your overall wedding budget. I.e, if your wedding budget were $50,000, your flowers would sit at approximately $5,000.00.

Items that are usually included for your 10% spend include, your bridal party flowers - bouquets and buttonholes, and ceremony and reception flowers.

This figure can change for any number of reasons. For example, if you have a larger then average bridal party, or if you have a large guest list with the intention of using florals throughout your styling, or you wish to heavily feature flowers at your ceremony, this can alter your final spend. Flower varieties are also widely priced differently based on availability and type. There are many variables, but the 10% guide is a good starting point to work from. It is important also to be honest with your suppliers. We can hang flowers from every surface in sight but we like to be realistic about what you love and what you would like to spend for your day.

What kind of trends are you seeing at the moment in terms of flower arrangements?

People are no longer scared of using colour. In fact it seems to be the brighter the better at the moment. Brides are choosing to carry bright and bold colour combinations as opposed to the traditional all white bouquet.

Ceremony trends have really moved towards freestanding feature florals, like arbours decorated with flowers and reception florals including floral backdrops and floral canopies are also very popular for 2015/2016.

Many of our couples are being a little more strategic with their budgets as well when planning for their reception flowers. Instead of adding lots of smaller vessels through out the venue for dry bars, coffee tables, dining tables etc, they seem to prefer larger feature pieces. This gives your room styling greater visual impact, and is especially noticeable in your photos.

What is the most rewarding part of being a floral stylist?

The people we meet is by far the most rewarding part of this career.

I love working with flowers and love creating something new every week but the main reason I continue with the late nights and very early mornings, is because I love helping people achieve the look they have for their day.

Be sure to stop by and say hello to Nicole at The Wedding Harvest - it's safe to say we are a little obsessed with her work!

SELECTING THE RIGHT PHOTOGRAPHER (with Kristy from Figtree Wedding Photography)

Selecting the perfect wedding photographer can be a daunting and overwhelming task, but there are ways to make sure that you walk away comfortable and happy with your decision.

Here are my tips on how to make this happen.

1. Set a style expectation, before your budget.
When you start to search for a photographer you will find that they range anywhere from $500 to $10,000. So it is important to set a certain budget level, but at the same time don’t let yourself be governed by it.

Generally with photography, you get what you pay for. Be it experience, quality, on the day knowledge, and after market products and service.

It is important to look around at styles you like before coming up with your budget. Look at pricing for that particular style and the calibre of photographers that you like. Then, only spend what you feel comfortable with for your coverage. It might mean reducing your photographer’s hours to get someone that you really, really like.

If you can’t afford the style of photography you really like, look at changing your date to an off-peak season.

2. Ask your photographer lots of questions.
This is probably one of the biggest investments you will make on the day, so go to your meeting/skype date or phone chat prepared.  Here is a list of questions that I would set aside to bring up;
- How long have you been a wedding photographer?
- Do you work with an assistant, or have back up camera gear?
- Do we receive the high-resolution copyright after the day?
- What are your payments terms?
- What happens if something happens and you can’t make it on the day?
- Will they be the photographer on the day?
- What is included in the package, and are there any additional costs to think about?
- Do they have some full weddings that they can show you from start to finish?

3. Make sure you get along.
You will be spending the better part of the day with your chosen photographer/s. Make sure you click, and will enjoy having them around.

4. Plan ahead
Good photographers can book out 12-18 months in advance. Some also only take on a limited number of weddings per year. So as soon as you set your date start to research which photographers you like and start to put the feelers out.

Take your time researching and looking for a photographer to suit your style and your day. There are so many fabulous photographers out there, so make sure that one of them is part of your wedding team!

Good luck,

Here is what some of our clients say about us:

Meika & Morgan, August 2013, Mirra Brisbane: We could not more highly recommend the team from Little Gray Station.  Judi and her team provided exceptional quality in styling our wedding in Brisbane.  With our relaxed consultations, you captured all our ideas and understood the styling we wanted for our special day.  In particular, we loved that you provided us with a fantastic mood-board and styling pack and we felt absolutely confident in your suggestions and innovations to add to our look – they were amazing and something that added a uniqueness to our wedding that made the entire event!

Andrea & Steve, 16th May, Osteria: What a pleasure it was to work with Judi and her team at Little Gray Station! We had a fairly hazy vision of how we'd like our day to be, but Judi took our ideas and turned them into reality! What a perfect day it was! I can't recommend these guys enough - everyone should have a 'Little Gray Station' wedding!

Stacey & Andre, May 2014, Woodlands of Marburg: ‘We could not be more grateful to Judi, Nicole and the Little Gray Station team for putting together our big day. From venues through to place cards and napkins, Judi had amazing ideas that reflected all the things we loved. No idea or request was too big for Little Gray Station and we could not have asked for more enthusiastic, wonderful (and talented!!!) people to work with for our wedding. We are so thankful for all the support and help we received in the months leading up to our wedding, along with all the sweet, thoughtful touches that made our day really special and personal (too many to name!) We honestly could not have wished for anything more for our day, the LGS team made everything so beautifully perfect’

PLANNING YOUR WEDDING CAKE

There is something unforgettable about a truly beautiful wedding cake. Whether it be an ombre ruffled cake, a rustic naked cake spilling with berries and buttercream, or a colourful fondant cake decorated with fresh flowers, there are so many different options in terms of design, flavor, texture and colour. Your wedding cake should reflect you and your partner, look beautiful, and of course taste delicious!

We had a chat with the lovely Bree from The Cake That Ate Paris (one of our talented Harvest Crop vendors!) who revealed all the details you should know in order to plan your dream wedding cake.

How far in advance should I book my cake artist?

B: Usually about 8 months in advance will give us plenty of time to play and make sure you don’t miss out on a spot!

What is involved in a cake consultation?

B: We go through lots of pictures and look at all sorts of stencils/molds that we might use and colour combinations. Then is the best part… the cake tasting! I usually have about 6 or 7 different flavours to try on the day.

What kind of flavours can I choose from?

B: I can pretty much make any flavor, but some popular flavors are raspberry buttercream, banana buttercream, choc mint mud, apple cinnamon and coconut passionfruit just to name a few!

What kind of trends are you seeing at the moment in terms of cake design?

B: Lots of naked cakes! Rustic buttercream covered cakes with beautiful fresh flowers. I do love making sugar flowers through and the fondant covered cakes with masses of hand made sugar flowers are still a favourite.

What kind of costs are involved/ how much of my budget should I set aside for my cake?

B: It totally depends on how many people the cake needs to feed and also what kind of design you are after. For a cake to feed 80-100 people you should leave at least $1000.00 aside for the cake.
